Masters Surf Reunion

This weekend hosts the Masters Surf Reunion at Playa Encuentro. A well organized event by Ricardo Ripoll, this competition will have some great surfers competing and the timing could not be better, with a nice big North swell arriving at the same time.

Get yourself down to the beach to take part in the action or to watch some good surfing action.

Surf and Stand up Paddleboarding Cabarete

It has been an amazing month already for surf conditions, May rarely sees the type of surf wave perfection we have been enjoying in the last week. This time of year the storms passing through the US are normally over and our surf calms down to a perfect beginner-sized wave. Instead, we have seen 2.5 metres + of North Swell direction, offering a line up of glassy waves every experienced surfer dreams of.

Jim was out on the SUP at Bozo Reef, Cabarete – enjoying the waves to himself……you can see one of his sessions on this video.

At Swell surf camp, we are pleased to announce that we are now offering Yoga as a regular part of our surf, spinning and SUP line-up. Surfing and Yoga are the perfect mix of disciplines and if you want more, for that extra cardiovascular fitness, you can also do our famous Spinning classes in central Cabarete.

2011 Master of the Ocean Competition, Cabarete

We are very happy to report that once again, Luciano Gonzalez, our chief Surf instructor at Swell has won this year’s Master of the Ocean competition, held each year in Cabarete.

For the first time, the competition, which combines the 3 disciplines of surf, kitesurf and windsurf, included Stand-up-Paddleboarding (commonly known as SUP).

This competition is hard at the best of times and Luciano put in months of tough training to achieve his goal of being untouchable in this competition. Congratulations to him; he richly deserves the title.

Jim’s really enjoying his Coreban SUP…… so much better than the crappy Naish SUP boards (another one has broken after just one year).

He shot this footage with his Go-Pro camera, this time mounted on the front of the SUP. Julian Kidd is the other rider out with him – another big SUP fan.

SUP Cabarete Bay and Kiteboarding at Encuentro

So finally, after almost 6 months and one board going missing, Jim finally gets his new Stand Up Paddleboard. I know I won’t be seeing him much over the next few mornings as he enjoys himself in the waves on Cabarete Reef. He bought a Coreban SUP, one of the most sought-after boards on the market.

To see the smile on his face when he returns to the apartment appears to have been worth the wait. It looks lovely and rides like a dream. Thank you to Poseidon Stand Up Paddle Surf Company for replacing the board that went AWOL.

Two days ago, we took our staff from Swell for a photo shoot

Luciano, JP and Martha and my son, Drew all came to Encuentro for a windy kite session. Here are some of the best pics from that session. JP and Martha have been working at Swell for the last month and are doing a great job!

Cabarete Spinning new venue open at Janet’s supermarket!

Cabarete Spinning has a brand new studio, thanks to the new extension at Janet’s supermarket at the East end of town.

The last three weeks have been, without doubt, the busiest of my entire life; Great new staff joining us at Swell, getting less than two week’s notice to quit my old spinning studio venue and having to create a new studio, a visit from my lovely parents, a busy hotel, not to mention being a mother and trying to plan our wedding for next year – my head is spinning (excuse the pun).

My last landlord has been replaced by a gentleman and his lady-wife, coming to the rescue of Cabarete Spinning in providing a great space for us in their expanding supermarket, central Cabarete. I’m very grateful to Janet and Jitu for their support of Cabarete Spinning, in existence for almost 7 years in Cabarete. Our move to Janet’s is positive in every way; more space, better sound and improved lighting/A/C and still the best value in town for a workout.
